Non riesco proprio a nasconderlo, e neppure farne a meno, di farmi piacere questo genere, definito "americana", ovvero quelle ballate in salsa folk/country/indie, che i maestri Wilco hanno rinverdito e rese ormai (a mio parere) punti artisticamente inarrivabili. Il nuovo album dei BUXTER HOOT'N va esattamente in quella direzione con l'uscita del loro secondo disco, con 10 canzoni di belle melodie e armonizzazioni vocali che potete ascoltare in streaming a questo indirizzo , mentre Blue Night potete anche scaricarla per arricchire il vostro insaziabile hard disk. Beh, la notizia della morte (cancro) di Calvin Russell mi è proprio sfuggita, e di questo, me ne rammarico. Questo texano, venuto (artisticamente) alla luce all'età di 40 anni, con il suo primo album A Crack In Time, non impiegò molto a farsi un giro di ammiratori intorno al globo. Come tanti, ebbe maggior fortuna fuori dalle mura amiche, mietendo consensi soprattutto in Francia. Mi ha tenuto compagnia in particolare col secondo album Sounds From the 4th World e con questa canzone Crossroads, un'inno all'indecisione, che in quegli anni mi marchiò a fuoco. Un loser DOC, di cui sentirò la mancanza. RIP.

SHE'S HIT, è una nuova band proveniente da Glasgow molto brava a districarsi tra le sonorità tanto care a The Cramps, Jesus & Mary Chain, Suicide, Iggy The Stooges. I tre brani postati mi sembrano ben riusciti con la linea basso/batteria ben in evidenza soprattutto in Miriam Hollow. Il loro album di debutto si chiama Pleasure ed esce il 6 giugno. Take a look.
Un altro ritorno, molto più che gradito, è quello di Garland Jeffreys. Artista che centellina le uscite a favore della qualità dei suoi album. E sì, perchè il 14 giugno uscirà il suo nuovo lavoro, The King Of In Between a più di dieci anni da Don't Call me Buckwheat, e a 31 dal suo lavoro migliore Escape Artist. Le sue canzoni sono sempre state un perfetto melting pot sonoro, mentre i testi non hanno mai abbandonato i temi del razzismo e della sua fanciullezza vissuta in angoli malfamati della "sua" New York. Non fanno eccezione nemmeno quelli presenti nel nuovo album, nel quale ricorda l'infanzia trascorsa a Coney Island. Coney Island Winter, dunque, è la canzone (sempre gratuita) che anticipa il nuovo album con tanto di video a seguito, diretto e assemblato da Doug Webb, realizzato con un collage di foto e di spezzoni di documentari girati a Coney Island nel '52 e nel '91.

Soprattutto quando escono dischi nuovi di gggiovani band, che non si preoccupano affatto di prendere a piene mani dai classici del rock, rock-blues, punk, l'appellativo "derivativo" diventa un collutorio per la bocca assolutamente irrinunciabile. A seconda, poi, del grado di piacere o di disgusto, che detto album provoca, il "derivativo" viene usato come aggettivo qualificativo ( quando in generale piace ma non troppo ) o dispregiativo ( quando al primo ascolto, proprio non lo mandi giù ). Tanto premesso, stasera vi lascio con un egregio secondo album dei canadesi Little Foot Long Foot, da titolo Oh, Hell Tra le 10 tracce Vi segnalo Neko Case Hate Fucks Kurt Cobain, May e Missing The Point. L'ascolto in streaming finisce il 4 giugno; poi si autodistruggerà, a meno che non lo compriate...ma ne dubito. L'altro album da ascoltare e che necessita di poche presentazioni fa capo ai The Vaccines, ormai sulla bocca di tutti gli ascoltatori più attenti, e per i quali molta stampa si è stracciata le vesti. Per me, un buon esordio e la solita manciata di canzoni con una marcia in più. D'altronde la stessa band ha intitolato il disco What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
Entrambi i titoli, dunque, non regalano niente in fatto di novità, ma hanno in se, un certo tipo di sonorità che trovo ancora piacevoli da ascoltare e che riescono a farmi avere qualche sussulto da imberbe rockettaro. Buon ascolto.

Well, unfortunately, two sources I believe, are both out of print. Now, one that I would discourage people from seeking out is the Restless [Records] album. If I could edit that into an extended play single, I'd be happier with it. But it was a project that was compromised from the very beginning. Then there was like a BBC-only, no wait. . . a small label named "Black Box" that did a different version. . . that was uh, I think limited to 500 copies. I'm going to have to do my homework on that one. But what's really funny about that Restless album and that's the Nova Mob album with the chimney on it. . . is that for eight months we had been talking to Rykodisc and Rykodisc was talking to us. . . They dropped the project back in my lap after we were already in the studio. So signing with Restless was kind of like a bail out the lifeboat kind of operation. And Restless at the time had made P&D [packaging and distribution] deals with Twin-Tone Records and immediately started dropping things from the catalog. They immediately started dropping entire labels from the catalog. And just not fulfilling what Twin-Tone had set out to do. And what's really ironic now is that now Restless is out of the picture but their liabilities have been assumed by Rykodisc. And according to a letter I got, it says that there have not been any copies sold in nine months, which to me tells me that they're all at distributors already or that they've kept it out of print. What I'd like to do with the next group of people is to take a small group of those songs and put them back in the hands of the listeners. You know, record them again. You know, you can never go back to the place that you were when you were originally recording it but with an eye to the past and grounded in the reality of the present you can do just as good of a job.
